I can walk again! What an awesome feeling. My ankle has healed well and every day means progress. There is progress with my latest book, too. The paperback of “Cold Dread” is published and the e-book will come out December 27.
You can pre-order the e-book for only 99 cents on Amazon.
A well-meaning reader wrote to me: “What are you doing in this remote place?” She had heard that I’m spending the winter in northern Newfoundland, on the very tip of the island. I don’t know what I will be doing during these cold, harsh, dark days but I rarely get bored.
Before the snow fell, my fisherman and I drove south for three hours. We had booked a nice AirBnB right on the ocean. A change of scenery is often so beneficial. You don’t have to go far. We wandered through fishing communities and discovered new trails. I cannot hike very far yet but every half hour makes me happy.
There are many things that one cannot take for granted in our remote area, restaurants for instance that stay open through the winter months. Or a supermarket that sells products that are hard to find. Or a courrier service that picks up items in the city of Corner Brook so that you don`t have to drive five hours (and five back) to get them. I’m really thankful for all the services that make my daily life easier here.
It is very fortunate that I can write my mystery thrillers in this isolated neck of the woods. My profession keeps me very busy. As a self-publisher I also have to take care of my translated books which is time-consuming. My translator Gerald Chapple is exceptional and so competent – what a blessing!
Coming back to what my reader asked me … I name here three diversions that I enjoyed in the last few weeks: I took part in a Trivia Night that was very popular. The restaurant room was crowded. The questions were not easy but my group did quite well considering the challenge. We ended up in the middle of the field. Another night, an artist friend of mine showed my step by step how to paint a snowman. I felt like being a carefree child again.
And I also played 120ies, my favourite card game. During a competition in the firehall of Noddy Bay, I was in third place and won a gigantic bottle of dish soap that will probably last me a year.
My brothers in Switzerland sent me a parcel with goodies in order to sweeten my winter days. You see, I’m now fully prepared to weather snow storms and whiteouts!
