A summer break that wasn’t

Hello lovelies, you haven’t heard from me for a while, at least in this blog (if you have subscribed to “Bernadette’s Letter” – there is a button on the homepage – then of course you have read about me, and I am also active on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok). I don’t know about you, but for me this summer flew by, fast like a bird – until my wings were clipped.

For the next few weeks, I won`t be hiking or driving a car at all because I broke an ankle and have to walk on crutches. One could argue that, as an author, at least I will be able to use my arms for writing. But I love hiking, as you know, especially in the fall, and I am crestfallen. I feel like a bird with clipped wings. But I also know people with far worse medical conditions and try not to complain too much.

Before my accident, I was often out and about in nature, on the spectacular hiking trails in northern Newfoundland. With my friends Neyda and Hope I hiked on the Iceberg Trail along the coast to an abandoned fishing village. Unfortunately, the houses there are falling apart and rotting. The church has long since disappeared. A local man has now built a cabin in the bay.

There were also reasons for joy: friends from British Columbia and their Swiss relative came to visit me. They had crossed the entire length of Canada in motorhomes, starting from the West Coast, and after about three months they turned up in our neck of the woods in northern Newfoundland.

I had warned them in advance that the weather can be cold and rainy in the second half of August. But to my surprise, the sun was shining with temperatures well above 20 degrees Celsius! I can’t remember such a warm late summer since I’ve been living in Newfoundland. It was ideal hiking weather, and I was able to introduce my friends to the beauty of this area. What luck!

Just recently, Gerald Chapple delivered the translated version of my next English Calista Gates crime novel. It has gone now to my copy-editor Lindsey Alexander.  I already have the book cover and the title in the can, and soon, I will be able to reveal everything to you. It looks like the new novel will come out at the end of November 2024, even if I am hampered by my injury. More to come!
