The Joys of Autumn

My new German mystery novel “Mörderischer Morgen” (Murderous Morning) that is set in British Columbia, Canada, will be published on November 7. My fantastic editor Gisa Marehn has just returned the text with her last edits and I am thrilled that my new baby will be out in this world soon. I hope to have an English translation next spring.

There is an excited expectation in the air which is kind of fitting because we are just experiencing some wonderful autumn days in Northern Newfoundland. I love the fall, with its stunning colours and golden light.

This is the scenery that I encounter on my daily walks.

It is toward the end of the fishing season on the Northern tip of Newfoundland and the fishermen have only a few days left to catch some more cod. Some of the fish is salted and dried for the winter. The fire wood has dried in the sun and wind, too, and people pack it inside the basement or wood shed. There has to be enough fire wood to burn for the long cold winter.

An unusual way to dry salted cod.

Every piece of wood is collected and dried for the long hard winter.
